Prerequisite

Competent practicing electrician qualified to NVQ Level 3 or equivalent.
Good working knowledge of BS7671 Ideally 18th 2382-18.
Competent inspection and testing skills i.e. C&G 2391, 2394, 2395 or EAL 4337, 4338.
The ability to terminate both MICC and SWA cable will be assessed during the assessments.

Aim of the course

This course will enable competent electricians and others such as qualifying managers working as part of a company or on their own, as well as those engaged on maintenance, to carry out the practical erection and verification of electrical installations on Filling Station Forecourts and similar locations, such as private dispensing, POL points, CNG/LPG both Industrial, Commercial and Domestic (subject to licensing) in accordance with the APEA/Energy Institute DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION, MODIFICATION AND MAINTENANCE OF FILLING STATIONS.

Entry requirements

You require a background in electrical installation i.e. competent practising electrician qualified to NVQ Level 3 or equivalent, good knowledge of electrical installation principles, the ability to terminate both MICC and SWA cable will be assessed during the assessments. Good working knowledge of BS7671, already possessing BS7671 Ideally 18th 2382-18, plus competent inspection and testing skills. Please Read Pages 3 & 4 of this document.

Course details

Areas to be covered include: – Installation theory, explosion protection, current installation practice, testing and inspecting. Including high current testing and earth electrode testing. There will be sufficient course material and content to place the student in a position to understand the areas being addressed by this course and examination: –

You may bring your own tools for the practical assessment if you wish (subject to a safety check by the assessor); the centre has adequate tools and equipment for those not able to bring their own tools i.e. travelling by train or plane etc. You may wish to bring a pair of overalls/normal work wear and must wear safety shoes (not trainers) for the assessment. NOTE: Sandals/flop flops are not permitted anywhere on our premises, you WILL NOT be allowed entry wearing such items of footwear, this is after all a working environment.

Study requirements:

30 Hours of study (plus examination and assessment) at the centre. This course is offered as full days only. No study or learning activity should be required for this course beyond the hours of attendance at the Centre. However, in cases where students have little or no knowledge of the principles/practice further study may be undertaken at the lecturers’ recommendation or the discretion of the student.

Examination I Assessment Details Students will sit the Compex multiple-choice examination and a practical competence assessment.

Future Prospects. Students will be able to make use of this knowledge as qualifying managers, installers or verifiers of installations; and/or assist with better comprehension of work instructions, installation, erection and verification for practising electricians.

Possession of this qualification should enhance both career prospects and job opportunities. Possession of the Comp ‘Ex’ qualification is recognised by the industry as an appropriate way of demonstrating competence to customers, licencing bodies, employers and quality assessment organisations.

You need to be aware that all of the following areas are integral to this course

Ability to understand and apply ADS/EEBAD, Circuit protective devices and their characteristics/parameters (Appendix 3 and Chapter 41: BS7671. Cmin, Acceptable Measured Values from Appendix 2 OSG, NICEIC chart, 80% rule). RCD’s, testing, disconnection times. Discrimination between devices both circuit protective and RCD’s, Fault current levels, energy withstand/energy let through. Co ordination of protection.

Ability to conduct a methodical inspection and provide a report, carryout a risk assessment, write a method statement?

Form filling; understanding and application of Zdb, PFC, RA, R1&R2 when completing inspection certification reports and schedules.

Possess an ability to terminate, both MICC and SWA cable, by using a variety of gland / seal types. Use standard test instruments, Loop Impedance/fault current, RCD, Insulation resistance/low ohms continuity. We will teach the theory and practice for earth electrode testers, high current testers and low current clamp meters.

Also possessing current practical and competent inspection and testing skills again ideally qualified to C&G or EAL. Together with the knowledge and skills outlined above.

Some people entering this course have not succeeded because of a lack of the BASIC underpinning knowledge/skills of the type outlined above (none of which on their own are specific to Filling Stations) and which should be part of everyday practice. We are NOT able during this course to provide training in basic skills and underpinning knowledge or make up for a lack of fundamental understanding of basic contracting concepts.

All of the following areas are assessed

  • Conduct a methodical site inspection.
  • Compile an inventory checklist.
  • Carryout a risk assessment, write a method statement.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the application and use of a permit to work, raise a clearance certificate and an isolation certificate.
  • Terminate both MICC and SWA cable using a variety of gland types. Connect cables wire up internal connections.
  • Install wire and connect a forecourt emergency stop / operator’s emergency stop / re-set installation including contactor etc.
  • Demonstrate inspection and testing of installed circuits using appropriate test instrument from appropriate locations including Loop Impedance/fault current, RCD, Insulation resistance/low ohms continuity. 4 terminal earth electrode tester, a high current continuity tester and a low current clamp meter.
  • Clearly outline the circumstances and requirements relating to ‘gas free’ testing.
  • Conduct an Inspection of a (simulated) existing operational filling station, completing all relevant documentation.
  • Perform safe isolation of a nominated installation or circuit to the satisfaction of the assessor.

All assessments are monitored and safety is expected to be displayed at ALL times. Unsafe practices or behaviour will be the subject of a verbal warning, failure to comply will result in the assessment being terminated.

Form filling, Zdb, PFC, RA, R1&R2.
