CompEx Gas And Vapours Modules EX01 – EX04 Installation, Maintenance and Inspection Training Plus Competence Assessment
Who is this course aimed at?
Those who carry out electrical installation or inspection of hazardous areas, normally practitioners with an electrical installation background. Known as the Electrical Installer Training Units they are for the training and certification of core competence of personnel who work on electrical apparatus for use in explosive atmospheres and undertake the physical installation, assembly of new ‘Ex’ equipment and, who perform maintenance, inspections and testing on previously installed equipment.
NB. There needs to be recognition that these specialised activities require a higher level of competence than similar activities carried out on normal industrial electrical equipment.
Companies or individuals involved with ATEX, IECEx or DSEAR equipment, are likely to be affected by the competence and training requirements set out in IEC60079-14 (2007) which specifies in detail the requirements for people involved in the installation of equipment or plant designed for use in hazardous areas (explosive atmospheres).
Designers and manufacturers of equipment also need to ensure they are making the right decisions when it comes to confirming the equipment is correctly specified and designed to the requirements of the correct and current standards.
Operatives (Technicians) are considered to be people who are involved in the selection, installation and inspection of equipment.
The Installation Standard requires an assessment of the delegates practical ‘skills’ in addition to theoretical training. This necessitates practical training and evaluations as provided by the ‘CompEx’ scheme where trainees are expected to assemble and install equipment (for example glands) that will then be taken apart and examined by assessors.
The course consists of classroom based theoretical training and ‘hands on’ training in a purpose built simulation areas together with practical training and examinations.
Syllabus

This course and assessment covers the hazardous area training units for the training and certification of core competence of personnel who work on electrical apparatus for use in locations where explosive liquids, gases, vapours and mists may be present.
Qualification and assessment
Training Method and Duration: We will be delivering the following training units:
- EX01 The preparation & installation of electrical apparatus protected by enclosure, for use in the presence of combustible liquids, gases, vapours and mists.
- EX02 Maintenance and inspection of electrical apparatus protected by enclosure, for use in the presence of combustible liquids, gases, vapours and mists.
- EX03 Preparation & Installation of EEx ‘ia’ and ‘ib’ Systems
- EX04 Inspection & Maintenance of EEx ia and ‘ib’ Systems
Due to safety considerations, a broad and extensive related JOB KNOWLEDGE forms an essential requirement for work within this sector.
Therefore, a syllabus showing the full breadth of knowledge against which assessment will occur is provided in the course manual.
Course aim and duration
The course aims to raise the awareness of delegate’s competence in the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment in potentially explosive atmospheres.
To include
Training and assessment to allow delegates to meet National Competence Standards. Using a ‘simulated’ working environment in which realistic training and assessment can take place which creates a means whereby:
Delegates can achieve nationally recognised certification to ‘Industry’ standards
- Where employers can satisfy their obligation to have ‘competence certificated’ personnel
The CompEx course covers 5 days of practical and theory, plus the practical assessment of electrical Ex installation and electrical Ex Inspection, and IS installation and IS inspection, plus the 60 question exam paper which is a closed book multi choice examination.
Assessment
EX01 – Preparation & Installation of EEx d, ’e’, ’n’ and ‘p’ Systems
- EX02 – Inspection & Maintenance of EEx ‘d’, ‘e’, ‘n’ and ‘p’ Systems
- EX03 – Preparation & Installation of EEx ‘ia’ and ‘ib’ Systems
- EX04 – Inspection & Maintenance of EEx ia and ‘ib’ Systems
Certification
Competence certificates will be issued and worded to indicate successfully completion.
